OMG Studios and Minnesota Humanities Center Announce Their Latest Film “The Making of America” Will Premiere at the Minneapolis Institute of Art

The documentary film explores how Enlightenment-era systems of knowledge shaped what became the United States of America

OMG Studios and Minnesota Humanities Center are excited to announce the premiere of their latest film, “The Making of America,” to be held at the Minneapolis Institute of Art Pillsbury Theater on June 28. The premiere will include a film screening, post-screening panel discussion, and art exhibit. Directed by Monique Linder, and produced by OMG Studios in partnership with Minnesota Humanities Center, the film explores how Enlightenment-era systems of knowledge—art, science, architecture, and cartography—produced enduring frameworks for racial slavery, territorial extraction, and Indigenous dispossession in what became the United States of America. The film is the seventh in the Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery film series from OMG Studios.

Quote from the Director, Monique Linder:

“After our last film about Reconstruction, I felt it was important that the next film go back to the very beginning, the making of America. This film really helps tie all the pieces in the Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery film series together in a significant way. I’m looking forward to sharing it with others.”

Watch the Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery Film Series

Since 2020, Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery Film Series has researched and documented historical truth about enslavement in America to educate communities, especially youth about history that is not recorded in school books. The series can be found in Minneapolis and Saint Paul school systems as Minnesota is spotlighted in each film, as a microcosm of what was taking place in the nation. Minnesota was unique in that it was a free territory that fully participated in the slave trade economy. Today, Minnesota is facing a reckoning of the truth of its history of enslavement, land seizure and indigenous dispossession.
